Welcome to Merry Meade Sanctuary!

This unique haven for abused and neglected draft horses came to exist because of a vision of its owner, Caroline Baum. The Chicago native, a lifelong equestrian, recognized a need for such a refuge and after many years of searching found 126 acres of beautiful land in south central Tennessee ideal for her purpose.

Merry Meade Sanctuary, Inc.
is a Tennessee Not For Profit organization.

Over thirty horses have arrived at this very special place. Many had been starved, beaten, or had become seriously ill. All have recovered and are enjoying their new life in a place where kindness, ample food, and loving care are the rule. Each draft horse eats at least one bale of hay a day, 2-15 pounds of grain, vitamins, herbs, and treats (extreme medical problems may require a very specific diet  to maintain health and soundness).

Merry Meade is also a sanctuary for many lost or abandoned dogs and cats. Rescued veal calves, chickens, guinea fowl, goats, donkeys, a mule, a pot bellied pig, and an unwanted tailless peacock are just a few lucky animals who have found their way here. Merry Meade philosophy is based on humane farming and uses natural methods of biological pest control, organic gardening, and avoids feeding toxic preservatives and chemicals which are in both human and animal feeds.  Our location - an hour from either Nashville, Tennessee or Huntsville, Alabama provides excellent access for visitors.

The mission of Merry Meade Sanctuary is to provide a safe, caring permanent environment for abused, neglected, starved, unwanted, and/or abandoned domestic animals especially rare equines such as Clydesdales and Shires. Merry Meade is a haven for over 250 animals including a variety of equines, dogs, cats, goats, peacocks, and many  more. Over 20 Shires have been rescued from certain death by Caroline Baum and Merry Meade Sanctuary. These truly fortunate horses will have a loving home at this serene sanctuary forever. Never again will they have to face being sold and possibly ending up at an auction being bid on for possible slaughter. The sanctuary also serves as an educational center where people can come and learn about the humane treatment of animals, meet a Gentle Giant up close and personal, and see what love, kindness, trust, and good healthy food can do.

Donations are the only source of funding to keep Merry Meade Sanctuary going. It takes a lot of time and money to acquire and rehabilitate these animals and keep them well fed and healthy. Each month the Merry Meade animals consume over 3,000 bales of hay, about 12 tons of grain, and literally tons of other chows and feeds. Routine farrier and veterinarian care are also maintained to insure the well being of the animals.
